FAQ

Is gold-filled jewelry actually hypoallergenic?

Yes, gold-filled jewelry is nickel-free and safe for most sensitive skin types. Unlike gold-plated pieces, which can expose the base metal underneath as the thin coating wears away, the gold layer in gold-filled jewelry is much thicker and bonded permanently so it stays between your skin and the base metal far longer.

Will gold-filled jewelry turn my skin green?

It shouldn't, under normal wear. Green skin discoloration usually happens when a played coating wears through and exposes the metal underneath. Gold-filled jewelry's thicker, bonded gold layer is built to prevent that from happening for years of typical use.

Can I shower or swim in it?

Yes, gold-filled jewelry is water-resistant and holds up well to daily wear, including showering. We'd still recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to chlorine or saltwater when possible, and drying pieces off after swimming, just to keep them looking their best long-term.

Is gold-filled the same as gold-plated?

No, and this is the most important distinction. Plating is a microscopically thin layer, often just microns thick, that wears through in weeks or months. Gold-filled uses a layer that's, by law, at least 5% of the total metal content, mechanically bonded under heat and pressure rather than sprayed or dipped on. It's a fundamentally more durable process.
